IMDG Code — Shipping Dangerous Goods by Sea

The IMDG Code governs how dangerous goods are shipped by sea. Here is what you need to know.

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code sets out classification, packaging, marking, documentation and stowage rules for dangerous goods carried by sea. It covers nine classes of hazard.

Shippers must classify the goods using the Safety Data Sheet, use UN-certified packaging, apply correct marks and labels, and issue a Dangerous Goods Declaration. Carriers may refuse undeclared or misdeclared cargo.

Misdeclaration is a serious safety risk and can lead to heavy penalties. Share your SDS early so your forwarder can confirm carrier acceptance.
