HS Code — What It Is and Why It Matters for Your Import

The HS code determines your duty rate. Using the wrong code can result in penalties. Here is how to get it right.

The Harmonized System (HS) is a global product classification with 6-digit codes; countries add digits for national tariffs. In India, the ITC-HS code has 8 digits.

The HS code decides your duty rate, licensing requirements and statistical reporting. Misclassification can mean underpayment or overpayment of duty, penalties and seizure.

Classify based on the product's composition, function and the General Rules of Interpretation, and where in doubt seek an advance ruling or a licensed CHA's opinion.
